If you just saw two SSI deposits land in the same month, nothing went wrong โ and it isn't extra money. Here's exactly why it happens and every date it happens in 2026.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments on the 1st of every month โ no exceptions for weekends. The problem is, the 1st doesn't always fall on a business day.
When the 1st lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, SSA doesn't make you wait until the next business day to get paid after the 1st. Instead, it pays you early โ on the last business day of the preceding month โ so your money is never late. That early payment is technically next month's benefit, just arriving ahead of schedule. If your regular check for the current month has already gone out, that early arrival shows up as a second deposit in the same calendar month.
Six payment dates get shifted early in this window. Most just move a single payment a few days earlier โ only four actually create a month with two deposits:
| Month | What Happens | Deposit Date(s) |
|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | Double payment | Dec 1, 2025 (Dec benefit) + Dec 31, 2025 (Jan 2026 benefit, early) |
| January 2026 | Single payment, early | Jan 30, 2026 (Feb 2026 benefit, early) |
| February 2026 | Single payment, early | Feb 27, 2026 (Mar 2026 benefit, early) |
| March 2026 | No deposit | โ (already paid Feb 27) |
| July 2026 | Double payment | Jul 1, 2026 (Jul benefit) + Jul 31, 2026 (Aug 2026 benefit, early) |
| August 2026 | No deposit | โ (already paid Jul 31) |
| October 2026 | Double payment | Oct 1, 2026 (Oct benefit) + Oct 30, 2026 (Nov 2026 benefit, early) |
| November 2026 | No deposit | โ (already paid Oct 30) |
| December 2026 | Double payment | Dec 1, 2026 (Dec benefit) + Dec 31, 2026 (Jan 2027 benefit, early) |
The pattern: a month only becomes a true "double payment" month when its own benefit lands on schedule on the 1st and the following month's 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, pulling that payment in early too. When two 1st-of-the-month dates in a row are both weekends/holidays (as happens with January and February 2026), you instead get back-to-back single early payments โ then a skipped month once the pattern catches up.
