Once you know all three FIRE numbers exist, the natural next question is: which one should you actually be aiming for? The honest answer depends less on which number sounds most impressive and more on how you actually feel about your current job, your risk tolerance, and what "freedom" really means to you.
This post is part of our FIRE planning guide — this is the deep dive on choosing between the three.
The single most useful question isn't "which number is smallest" — it's "how do I feel about going to work tomorrow?" That answer points toward a different target for almost everyone.
Coast FIRE fits best. You keep working exactly as you are — same job, same hours — but once you hit your Coast number, you no longer need to keep contributing to retirement specifically. Every future dollar you earn can go toward today's life instead of tomorrow's number.
Barista FIRE fits best. It requires a meaningfully smaller portfolio than Full FI, since part-time or lower-stress income covers part of your expenses. This is usually the fastest realistic path to actually working less, not just having the option to someday.
Full FI is the real target. It requires the largest number of the three, since your portfolio alone needs to cover 100% of expenses indefinitely. It takes the longest to reach, but it's the only one of the three that removes work from the equation entirely.
In practice, most people move through these numbers in sequence rather than picking just one forever. A common path: reach Coast FIRE first (since it requires the smallest number and the most time is on your side), consider shifting toward Barista FIRE once that number is within reach, and for some, keep building toward Full FI even after an earlier milestone is already achievable — simply because circumstances or goals changed along the way.
Start with the biggest number — everything else is measured against it
Find Your Full FI Number →Coast FIRE is usually the right fit — it doesn't require leaving your job or reducing hours, it just means you no longer need to keep saving for retirement specifically, since your existing portfolio is already on track to grow into your full number by traditional retirement age.
Barista FIRE is typically the fastest way to meaningfully reduce your work hours, since it requires a smaller portfolio than Full FI — part-time income covers the rest of the gap.
Yes. It's common to reach Coast FIRE first, downshift toward Barista FIRE once that number is close, and keep building toward Full FI afterward if you want complete independence from any work requirement at all.
Start with your Full FI number, since Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE are both defined relative to it — Coast FIRE asks what you need today to grow into that number, and Barista FIRE asks how much smaller the number gets once part-time income covers part of your expenses.
